Griff Davis and Langston Hughes: A Friendship in Letters and Photographs

As a photojournalist and member of the US Foreign Legion Griffith J. Davis (1923 – 1993) photographed during an important time of change for African Americans in the mid-20th century. He traveled to remote places and was able to meet with many key figures of that time. Early in his career, while attending Columbia University’s School of Journalism, he met and lived with poet Langston Hughes in Harlem during the renowned Harlem Renaissance. Their lifelong friendship is documented in Davis’s photographs as well as in Hughes’ biography.
